This will only make sense if you're a fangirl/boy. To anyone else this will sound like the deranged wittering of someone who is old enough to know better and to actually have a life.

You never know when a series is going to grab you. I don't mean you-like-watching-it grab you, but heart-and-soul, mary-sue-imagining, full-scale muses grab you. Blake's 7 did it. Highlander did it. Doctor Who does it. Torchwood does it. Battlestar Galactica doesn't and I don't know why not. And for some reason ITV's Primeval has just done it.

Admittedly it's deeply silly, Saturday night entertainment. But it has dinosaurs, a smattering of sci-fi, hot men and slash that can be seen from orbit. The main heroes are very pretty and very, very slashy together. But it's a semi-minor character that has really grabbed me. That's Captain Ryan - the main military back-up. And I say semi-minor because he's in every ep and generally has more to do or say that at least one of the main cast. But we never learn anything about him. But he's hot (see icon), looks very good in combat gear and can say lines like 'Professor, we have a dodo down.' with total conviction.

Last night was the final ep of this series and they killed him off.

I am gutted. Really, really gutted. I'm as bad as I was after Cyberwoman left the Jack/Ianto ship hanging in the balance. And [livejournal.com profile] jhava will tell you, that's pretty bad.

I know there's always fanfic, but that's not the point! I liked him. And although they've got a temporal problem to fix as a cliff-hanger, I doubt that they'll bother to bring Ryan back when they have a main character to get back.

And what gets me the most is that it was an unnecessary death. They needed a body (or rather skeleton) to match continuity for the first ep, but it could have been any other soldier-type knocking around. It didn't have to be Ryan. And next series they will still need a main soldier-guy to give all the orders via. He fulfilled a necessary function so they're going to have to replace him. So why not just leave him alive in the first place. GAH!!!

Someone's taken my ball away and I am sulking now.

And yes, I know that this once again proves that I have no life. And probably a tenuous grasp on reality. So sue me.
